Convert AVIF to GIF
This conversion is nearly always about a destination that has not moved on: an old forum, a wiki, a chat client, an email signature or a piece of internal software that recognises GIF and nothing else. GIF is the lowest common denominator of image formats, which is exactly why it is still useful when nothing else gets through.
Drop your AVIF files below and download GIF in seconds. Free, unlimited and completely private: the conversion runs inside your browser, so your files never leave your device and are never uploaded to a server.

Why convert AVIF to GIF?
It is worth being clear that GIF is a downgrade in every technical sense except compatibility. A GIF is capped at 256 colours per frame, so an AVIF photograph with millions of colours has to be reduced to fit that palette. For flat graphics, logos and screenshots with limited colour, the result is usually indistinguishable. For photos, expect visible banding in skies and gradients.
AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec and reaches even smaller files than WebP at the same visual quality. All modern browsers can display it, but many image editors and older tools cannot open it yet, which is the main reason people convert AVIF to an older format.
GIF dates back to 1987 and is limited to a 256 color palette, which shows in photos but is fine for flat graphics. It remains everywhere thanks to animation support and universal compatibility. For still images, PNG or WebP almost always produce better quality at a smaller size.
What this converter does to your AVIF file
The AVIF is decoded, then quantised down to a 256 colour palette and written as a single frame GIF. Two consequences worth knowing: an animated AVIF loses its animation and only the first frame is kept, and because GIF transparency is a single on/off bit rather than a real alpha channel, soft AVIF edges are hardened during the palette step.
AVIF vs GIF at a glance
| AVIF | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | AV1 Image File Format | Graphics Interchange Format |
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Lossless, 256 colors |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Next generation web images | Simple animations, icons and flat graphics |
What changes when you convert AVIF to GIF
| What happens | |
|---|---|
| Image quality | Reduced. GIF holds at most 256 colours, so a photograph is quantised down to a palette. Flat graphics usually survive intact. |
| Transparency | Kept. GIF stores an alpha channel, so cut-out backgrounds and soft edges survive. |
| EXIF and GPS | Removed. The conversion goes through a pixel buffer, so camera data and location are not carried into the GIF file. |
| Colour profile | Not carried across. The image is handled in sRGB, which is right for the web and wrong for colour-managed print work. |
| Animation | Not preserved. An animated AVIF produces a single still frame. |
| File size | Larger, often several times. Lossless formats cannot match what a lossy encoder already achieved. |

Frequently asked questions
Why does my photo look banded as a GIF?
GIF stores at most 256 colours per frame. A photo typically contains far more, so smooth gradients such as skies get approximated by the nearest palette colour, which shows up as visible bands. This is a limit of the GIF format itself, not of the conversion.
Does an animated AVIF stay animated as a GIF?
No. This converter renders a single still frame, so an animated AVIF becomes a one frame GIF of its first frame. If you need to keep the animation, a dedicated video or animation tool is the right choice.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is a next generation format with excellent compression, increasingly used on modern websites.
What is a GIF file?
GIF is an older format limited to 256 colors, still popular for simple graphics and icons.
Is it free to convert AVIF to GIF?
Yes. There are no limits, no watermarks and no account needed. Convert as many AVIF files as you like.
Are my files private?
Completely. Your AVIF files never leave your browser and are never uploaded to a server, so your images stay on your device.
